Lead Like Jesus

I look for leadership examples in everything I do. As you’ve guess from my writing, I’m a Christian and I love Jesus. It just so happens that Jesus is the perfect example of leadership. Despite what you believe, we all have something we can learn from Jesus. And I believe that when we lead like Jesus, our leadership will improve drastically. My hope in discussing this is that you would pick up a few tips and tricks to improve your leadership.

I will be working through Christian scripture rather slowly to pick out the things that Jesus did or talked about. I believe these things can have a direct impact on your leadership as a whole.

We’ll start with Matthew 7:24-27:

Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.

You’ve most likely heard this story, and you may be wondering what this has to do with leadership. Bear with me.

As John Maxwell says, “Leadership is influence.” If that’s the case, we need to know how to build influence in order to become better, more effective leaders. And how to we do that? We lead like Jesus and apply his words to our leadership. The above passage is pretty clear about basing one’s life on the truths Jesus is speaking. I believe there’s also a timeless truth to this as well. Influence should be developed by doing what Jesus said and did. Just like our lives should be placed on the firm foundation of Jesus’ words and life, so should our influence be found in that. If we seek to leverage other sources to gain influence (the sand), we will lose our footing and our whole lives can come crumbling down.

These won’t always be long, but I’ll always include a brief summary at the end of this series. Here’s this week’s summary: Lead like Jesus by building influence through practicing what Jesus said and did.
