Matthew 18:20 Daily Devotional
In and our of context, this verse is good. In context it’s about how the Lord is with us in our conflict resolution. He promises to be present in our reconciliation. Out of context, this is used a lot in gatherings, but that can be a little dangerous. It’s important to recognize that God is with the individual and his Spirit can be with us even outside of a group. Gathering is important, but it isn’t a prerequisite for Jesus’ presence.
For application, let’s stick with the in-context version. This verse means there’s no special person to grant permission in forgiveness – no special sacrifice. All it takes is the parties involved and Jesus, who promises to be there.
Lord, help me to live at peace with everyone. If there’s someone I need to forgive, help me forgive them. If I need to seek someone’s forgiveness, reveal that to me, too. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
