Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world.
Love for the things of this world is in opposition to love for the Father. “The world” here doesn’t mean the people in it, only the sinful desires brought on by the world itself. One might say that “seeking status” would fall into this category now.
Instead of seeking to please the world, we should seek to please God. We can do that by worshipping God and serving others. By doing either, we put the desires of the flesh in check. We don’t get to fully eliminate them, but we can manage them better.
Help me to love you, Father. More than anything in this world, I want to love you more and become more like you. I want to get closer to you so I can love those around me better. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
