Isaiah 53:5 Daily Devotional
This is a prophetic verse explaining what Jesus would be coming to do. He was pierced, both in his side with a spear and in his hands and feet with nails. The Romans and ancient Jewish people crushed him, both attempting to crush his spirit and successfully crushing his physical body. All this to bring us peace, so we don’t have to experience the punishment we deserve, and healing, so we no longer have to live in our sin. We are healed so we can live full, meaningful life – an abundant life.
Our response to this verse is the application. How we live our lives according to what Jesus did is the application. Let’s take what Jesus did for us and share that news. Let’s take what Jesus did for us and worship him all the more. Remembering what Jesus did for us makes it possible for us to love our neighbors as ourselves. We’re no longer slaves to the selfishness that prevents us from loving well. So the ultimate application, then, is to take up our cross and follow Jesus.
Thank you for everything you’ve done for me. You died so I may live a free and abundant life. Help me to live my life from that place of victory. I know things aren’t always going to be good, but you’re with me in both the good and the bad times. You will never leave me or forsake me, and I’m grateful that you stick closer to me than family. Jesus, come and have your way in me today. It’s in your name I pray, amen.
