Luke 6:45 Daily Devotional
“A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.”
Good things can’t come from bad sources and bad things can’t come from good sources. Good things come from good sources, and bad things come from bad sources. Jesus is saying here that the source of all good or all evil is the heart. If a person’s heart is good, there will be good things sent forth. If there is evil in a person’s heart, then they’ll only speak what is evil. The mouth cannot contain – it cannot filter – what the heart is full of.
Be careful what you speak, as it’s an indicator of what’s going on in your heart. If you notice you’re speaking in a way that you don’t like or that is offensive to people, seek help. Talk to a trusted friend or pastor or counselor who can help you identify what’s going on in your heart. After you identify the problem, you can tackle it head on with the help of that friend, pastor, or counselor.
Search me, Lord. Know every part of me. Rid me of any evil that’s in my heart that is causing evil to bubble up out through my mouth. Help me to be a constant source of good, positive, and encouraging speech and to put evil speech behind me. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
