Matthew 5:3 Daily Devotional
This short verse is part of a larger collection of sayings from Jesus called the Beatitudes. It comes at a time when people had a distorted view of righteousness and holiness, where people believed it’s what you did that caused God to love you. This verse is a clear case against that. Jesus says it’s the “poor in spirit” that inherit the kingdom of heaven. It’s not the ones who “have it all together” or believe and do all the “right” things. It’s the people who are genuinely trying even when they don’t seem to get it.
Just like grace, the beautiful thing about blessing is there’s nothing you can do to really earn it. You just have to receive it. Acknowledge where you are with God and own it. By all means, get closer to him by reading the Bible and spending time with him daily. Just know that there’s nothing more you can do to receive the blessings he has for you.
Jesus, thank you for this gift. When I feel low, you give me the encouragement I need to keep going. Help me to receive the gift that you promised in Matthew 5:3 as well as all the other promises you have for me all throughout scripture. It’s in your name I pray, amen.
