Colossians 3:12 Daily Devotional
We are God’s chosen people. That title doesn’t belong to only Israel anymore, but it is now shared with those who believe in Jesus. Because of that, we can (and must) cover ourselves with the good things the Apostle Paul is listing here. The first, and arguably most important is compassion, which is necessary for empathy and serving others.
I could give some examples about how we can apply compassion, kindness, humility, and so on, but it’s more important to point something else out. We are God’s chosen people, yes, but to embody the things the Apostle Paul lists is a choice. These don’t come naturally and are sometimes opposed to human nature. We don’t always want to be kind to people who aren’t kind. However, God chose us and now we must choose him by being compassionate and helping others. He chose us and now we must choose him by being kind, humble, gentle, and patient. The Lord chose us, so we must choose to be like him.
God, help me to be more like you. I want to embody each of these characteristics listed in Colossians 3:12, but I can only do that with your strength. Give me the ability to choose these virtues even when I don’t feel like being compassionate or kind. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
