Matthew 6:34 Daily Devotional
Every day has its unique version of trouble. Jesus is telling us to concern ourselves with today – with what’s actually happening – as opposed to what may happen tomorrow. The thing about tomorrow is that whatever we think might happen is not guaranteed. Tomorrow itself is not promised. Live each day focused on being present in the moment; you can take care of tomorrow when you get there.
Dealing with worry and anxiety is hard. I’m a big advocate for mental health professionals, and if you think you have anxiety or depression, please seek professional help. For those people and the ones who may not necessarily need professional help, prayer does work in dealing with anxiety. On a more practical level, breathing exercises are helpful in calming a chaotic mind. Breathe in for four seconds, hold for four seconds, breathe out for four seconds, and hold that for four seconds. Repeat as often as necessary, then deal with the next available problem.
Jesus, I thank you that you are present in the midst of my pain, anxiety, and chaos. Bring me peace in times of trouble, reassuring me that you have truly overcome the world. Help me to breathe easy knowing you will take care of me today and every day. It’s in your name I pray, amen.
