How to be a Disciple [Acts 1:8 Daily Devotional]
This verse teaches us how to be a disciple. Jesus promises that we will receive his power when we receive the Holy Spirit. The purpose of that power is not just to have power, but to use it to make disciples to all the world. “Jerusalem” would be whatever city you’re in; “Judea and Samaria” would be whatever country you’re in; and “to the ends of the earth” is everything in between. We’re called to reach those both near to us and far from us.
How to be a Disciple:
If you believe in Jesus, the Holy Spirit is living in you. The question then is, “What are you going to do with that power?” You can impact your city by starting with your neighbors. Think of ways you can serve them. Do they need help with yard work? Do they need someone to watch their dog? Get to know them and understand how to practically meet their needs.
You can impact your state or country by partnering with organizations that do work around the area, such as food banks, homeless shelters, and orphanages. Gather a list of organizations whose mission statement you can get behind and offer your time and resources. Churches are also a great way to make an impact beyond your immediate sphere.
You can impact our world by supporting missionaries or going out as a missionary yourself. Short-term mission trips are a great way to meet believers from all over the world while also serving people. There are many options for each of these categories, but the important part is that you start moving and listening to the Holy Spirit.
Thank you, Lord, for your power. Help me to use the Holy Spirit living in me to serve those around me in my city, state, country, and world. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
