How to Love Your Enemies [Matthew 5:44 Daily Devotional]
Jesus is using his platform to teach us a new way to live. The world has been telling us one way to live, but Jesus comes with a better way. Instead of retaliating against your enemies, Jesus says to love them. Instead of cursing those who persecute you, Jesus says to pray for them. These are both difficult things to do in the moment, but the Lord gives us the strength to do them. It isn’t easy, but you need to learn how to love your enemies.
How to Love Your Enemies:
This verse still applies today; there’s a timeless truth to what Jesus is saying here. The enemies we have typically aren’t seeking to physically harm us in many cases, but there is always going to be people you don’t always get along with. That much is inevitable. So what should you do? Serve your enemy. Pray for them. It’s counterintuitive, but that’s how Jesus lived and it’s how he’s telling us to live here. If you can meet the practical needs of your enemy, Jesus tells us to do it. If you find yourself thinking about the people who don’t like you, you can pray for them. It’s simple, but it’s not easy. Be a good neighbor even if the other person won’t be.
Thank you for your unconditional love, Jesus. Even when I was still a sinner, you died for me so I can have eternal life. Give me the strength to love my enemies the same way you love me. Help me to share your unconditional love with everyone. It’s in your name I pray, amen.
