How to Be Free [Galatians 5:13 Daily Devotional]

“You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.”‬‬

‭‭‭‭Galatians‬ ‭5:13

Observations

The author of Galatians, the Apostle Paul, is telling us how to be free – what it means to really be free. The freedom we have is unchained and technically limitless. However, true freedom is knowing when to limit your personal freedom for the sake of someone else. Paul writes here that there’s something better than unbridled freedom (which could be argued isn’t freedom at all, but that’s a topic for another time). The better option is to serve those around you and love them humbly.

Applications

To start loving others humbly, we have to start serving them. That’s the application here. People will know how much you love God by how love others. Prayer is good and needed, so do that. Beyond prayer, though, if you can meet someone’s practical needs, then do that; it’s far better. In some cases that may be mowing someone’s lawn. In other cases, it might be a bit more involved where someone needs you to bring them to the hospital. Never be too busy to help someone in need.

Prayer

Jesus, thank you for setting me free. As I begin to serve others, show me how to be free. Help me to see the needs of those around me. Give me the strength to jump in and help others and love them humbly. It’s in your name I pray, amen.
