How to Hear God [Romans 10:17 Daily Devotional]
“So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.”
What is this verse about?
The Apostle Paul, the author of the letter to the Romans, is teaching us how to hear God’s voice. First, we must understand that hearing from God comes from our faith in him, and faith is developed by our belief in Jesus. It’s a simple verse communicating a simple truth: we hear by faith.
How to Hear God
Honestly, I’ve never heard the audible voice of God. Maybe you have, and that’s great! The rest of us have to trust that our internal voice, those little nudges in a certain direction, is God speaking to us. According to this verse, there are a couple of things we can do to hear God.
- The first thing you need to do is read your Bible a couple times a week if not every day. Specifically, you’ll want to read the New Testament because that’s where Jesus’s words are. If your faith is truly developed by the word of Christ, it’s important that you read his recorded word. As you continue to read his word, you can move on to the second step.
- Stop and listen. I know it’s hard to stop and listen in our fast-paced society, but faith comes from hearing and you can only truly hear when you slow down. To start off, just take a minute to sit in silence a couple of times a week. You can build from there, but start small as you learn how to hear God’s voice.
Jesus, thank you for your word. I thank you that I can hear from you through your word and spending time with you every day. Help me to discern the little nudges that continue to point me in whichever direction you want me to go. It’s in your name I pray, amen.
