How to Have a Mind Directed by the Spirit [Romans 8:6 Daily Devotional]
“The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.”
What is this verse about?
The author of this letter to the Roman church, the Apostle Paul, is writing to his church plant. He’s saying that grounding our thoughts – our mind – in the things of this world leads to death. The other option, then, is to ground our thoughts in the Holy Spirit and let them be directed by him. Only then will we find life and peace in our thoughts.
How to Have a Mind Directed by the Spirit
You have more control over your thoughts than you think you do. The fact that you’re able to think about your thoughts is a clear indication of that. So then, how do you have your mind directed by the Spirit? Submit your thoughts to him. This isn’t some fancy, religious experience where you meditate for days on end. You can do this simply by praying. Ask the Lord to examine your thoughts and determine if those thoughts are leading to life or death. If they’re leading to death, ask the Lord to purify your mind and help you redirect your thoughts to life-giving thoughts.
Jesus, thank you for the ability to think about what I think about. Help me to come to you in the middle of my swirling thoughts, and heal me from the thoughts that bring death. It’s in your name I pray, amen.
