Ephesians 5:1 Daily Devotional [How to Follow God’s Example]

“Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children”

Ephesians 5:1 (see verse)

What is Ephesians 5:1 about?

Ephesians 5:1 has two parts. The first is encouragement from Paul, the author, who tells us to look to God as an example of how to live. The second part is an affirmation about who we are. Paul wants us to “follow God’s example” by becoming more of who we really are: children loved by God.

How to Follow God’s Example

Since you are God’s children and there’s nothing you can do to change that, we can focus on the first part of this verse. How do you follow God’s example? Luckily for you, God sent his example to live among us in the form of Jesus. That means you can follow God’s example by living how Jesus lived.

We know Jesus loved people. That means you must also love people. You can do that by serving them, praying for them, and being generous. Jesus met practical needs by feeding people. Of course, he was able to do this at a large scale because of supernatural means, but feeding just one person and meeting that practical need is pleasing to the Lord (see Matthew 25:40).

Jesus also prayed for people often. He usually did this in the form of healing or forgiveness, and you can do that, too! You can also pray that the Lord would meet people where they are. There is no limit to what you can pray for.

Lastly, Jesus was generous. He gave his time and resources to the people around him without reservation. I challenge you to do the same. Start giving to your church. If you don’t trust your church with your money, find another church. The local church is Jesus’s plan to change the world, and it needs you to be generous with your money, time, and talents. In addition to giving to your church, you can also start by carrying around some petty cash for the people in need around you. Start even smaller, if you’d like, and just buy your friend’s lunch every now and then. Generosity breaks money’s hold on you, no matter how small you start.

Father, I thank you for the example of Jesus. Help me to live my life according to that example so I can live my life to the fullest. Give me the courage to serve others, pray for them, and be generous with my money, time, and talents. It’s in Jesus’s name I pray, amen.
