Mark 8:35 Daily Devotional [How to Save Your Life]
What is Mark 8:35 about?
Jesus is teaching us how to live. If you live selfishly and isolated, you will not live your life as God meant it to be lived. However, as you begin to live a selfless life in community and vulnerability, you will truly live. The more you try to hold on to your own life and save yourself, the further you will spiral out of control. The more control you give away to God and as you live a gospel-centered life, which requires sacrifice, you will live.
How to Save Your Life
This verse sounds intense, but it doesn’t have to be. In order to save your life, as Jesus says, you must give your life up to him and his Gospel. What does that look like? Doing the things Jesus did. Pray for others, meet practical needs, serve others, and give freely. You don’t need to do any of those things to be saved, Jesus did that for you on the cross and through resurrection. Jesus’s sacrifice, though, should inspire you to live that full, selfless life instead of trying to hold on to what little control you think you really have.
Jesus, thank you for saving my life. Help me to use the grace you’ve given me and extend it to others around me. Give me the courage to pray for others, to meet practical needs, to serve others, and to be generous. I give you control of my life, Lord. It’s in your name I pray, amen.
