How to Be Humble [Proverbs 22:4 Daily Devotional]
What is Proverbs 22:4 about?
I wrote about the fear of God previously, and this verse builds on that. What the author of this proverb is saying is that being humble is one way to “fear the Lord.” Again, this isn’t literally being afraid of God, but you can read more about that in my other post.
What this is saying is that humility has its rewards. While it can be uncomfortable to be humble and release control to God, you receive life in return. That means this kind of humility – this fear of God – is worth it. Humility, not pride or control, leads to “riches and honor and life.”
How to Be Humble
To be humble means to think of yourself less. Read that again. It’s not thinking less of yourself, that’s false humility. If you think beating yourself up and thinking you’re nothing is humility, I challenge you to bring that to the Lord and learn confidence. To be humble means to think of others first; it is selflessness. Instead of figuring out ways to advance yourself, think of ways to help others get further in their life. Serve them, pray for them, help them. And trust that the people around you will do the same.
Jesus, help me to grow in humility. Investigate my mind and my heart and guide me in true humility. Help me to think about myself less and think about others more. Give me the strength to have godly confidence and know that I’m a child of the Most High God. Give me opportunities to encourage others and lift them up. It’s in your name I pray, amen.
