The Gift of the Holy Spirit [Luke 11:13 Daily Devotional]

“If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

Luke 11:13

What is Luke 11:13 about?

We know how to give good gifts. Even the least thoughtful person knows how to give a good gift to those they care about. Since we know how to give good gifts, even though we’re imperfect, we can rest assured knowing that our perfect God knows how to give even better gifts.

In the case of this verse, Jesus is specifically talking about the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the perfect gift from a perfect Father because we need the spirit in order to operate according to God’s will in our lives.

The Gift of the Holy Spirit

In order to receive this gift that Jesus is talking about, he says we need to ask. The Lord gives the gift of the holy spirit freely but only to those who ask. He knows exactly what we need at all times, but he wants to hear from us.

So how do we ask God for this gift? One was is through prayer. There’s no secret formula to prayer, either. It’s not some mythical set of words that you use to invoke the name of God. Prayer is simply a conversation with Jesus. I like to start with gratitude for the things God has already given me, and then move on to the things that I still need. The Father cares deeply about everything you need, and as Jesus said, he is ready and willing to provide what we need.

Father, I thank you that you care so deeply for the things I need. Thank you for providing the Holy Spirit as the perfect gift for every season of my life. Give me the wisdom to seek you in both my times of weeping and my times of rejoicing. It’s in Jesus’s name I pray, amen.
