Ask Seek Knock [Matthew 7:8 Daily Devotional]
What is Matthew 7:8 about?
Jesus is showing his followers why they should pray.
Those who don’t can’t receive. It’s not that God doesn’t know what they want, it’s just that they haven’t put in the time to seek God and align their hearts to his will.
Those who don’t seek can’t find because they’ve become blind to their needs and have given up searching for them. The person who doesn’t ask also can’t seek.
Those who don’t knock are unaware of the opportunities that lay right in front of them. Instead of pushing forward and seeking Jesus in prayer and asking for what they need, they abandon their search for easier things.
Ask Seek Knock
This verse is all application, and it even provides a progression of how things are done. First, ask for the things you want and need because God cares deeply for you and wants to hear you asking for the things you want and need.
Second, seek out the things you want and need. Prayer without action on our part is usually wasted breath. There are, of course, times where the Lord will work on our behalf, but most times it seems like we are required to do our part once we ask for what we want or need – we can trust the Lord to fulfill those needs in the process.
Lastly, knock. It’s time to seize the opportunity once you seek out what you’ve been asking for. The Lord has set you up for this time in the process, so you can approach your wants and needs with confidence knowing that, at this point, the Lord has prepared them for you.
Father, thank you for all you’ve done in my life. Help me to recognize my needs and wants so I can ask for them, seek them out, and knock for them. It’s in Jesus’s name I pray, amen.
