Overcome Evil With Good [Romans 12:21 Daily Devotional]
What is Romans 12:21 about?
The meaning of this verse is very simple. Instead of succumbing to evil, overcome that evil with good. We’re imperfect people, so we’re not always going to get this right, which means we’ll sometimes land ourselves in some kind of a mess. In those circumstances, though, we can come back to this verse and work on overcoming that evil with the goodness we have through Jesus Christ.
Overcome Evil With Good
You’re able to do this through the grace of Jesus, who died on a cross for the forgiveness of your sins. His power now lives in you, which allows you to pray for others, serve people, and live generous lives. And this is how you overcome evil.
By praying for others, you’re softening your heart as well as the hearts of others to what God has to say to and about them. Prayer puts you in a position of empathy for the people you’re praying for. And when you’re empathetic toward another person, you’re much more willing to give them grace.
Serving others allows you to meet the practical needs of your community. Some people that you serve will be in tough situations in their lives that they’re not necessarily able to get out of by themselves. When you come alongside someone like that, you can begin to lift them out of their mess and help them experience the love of Jesus.
Giving generously allows you to use your resources for a purpose greater than yourself. Go beyond using your time to serve people. Giving breaks the grip that money has on your life, so it’s really as much for you as it is for the people around you.
Father, thank you for the ability to overcome evil. Help me to love those around me. Give me the courage I need to pray for them, serve them, and give generously. It’s in Jesus’s name I pray, amen.
