Bread of Life [John 6:35 Devotional]

Bread of Life [John 6:35 Daily Devotional]

“Then Jesus declared, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.’”

John 6:35

What is John 6:35 about?

First, this verse is not meant to be taken literally. We need food and drink to survive, that’s how we were created to work. Jesus is specifically talking about living and how he is the sustaining force of life. Just as bread and water keep us alive physically, Jesus is that bread and water that keeps us alive spiritually.

Bread of Life

While Jesus is always the sustaining force of our spiritual life, you have a part to play, too. Jesus lays out two actions that we have to do to receive this life he has to offer.

  1. The first is to go to Jesus. Seek him out. He says that whoever goes to him will never be (spiritually) hungry. You go to Jesus by spending time with him, reading the Bible, and doing the things Jesus did. Serve others, and be the hands and feet of Jesus.
  2. The second is to believe in Jesus. Recognize the order here. Going to Jesus does not require believing in Jesus; that part can come later. Believing in Jesus requires you to believe Jesus. Believe that he died on the cross for the forgiveness of sins but on the third day rose again to declare victory over death. He then appeared to his followers and the general public several times before going to be with the Father in the heavenly realm. Do that, and you will never experience that spiritual thirst again.

Jesus, I come to you. Help me to do the things that you did – just as you commanded me. Give me the courage and the strength to live a life worthy of your sacrifice. It’s in your name I pray, amen.
