The Golden Rule [Matthew 7:12 Daily Devotional]
What is Matthew 7:12 about?
We know this verse as the “Golden Rule.” Jesus is laying out the best way to relate to others. Simply put, just treat others in a way you would want to be treated. And there are no exceptions. Jesus tells us that we’re supposed to do this in everything, not just sometimes. Doing as Jesus says in this verse is a fulfillment of all of the Old Covenant including its laws and even the things said by the prophets.
The Golden Rule
This verse is all application. In order to gain respect, respect others. In order to gain trust, show what it means to be trustworthy. I write extensively about praying for others, serving them, and giving generously, and this verse is where that comes from. I encourage you to pray for other people because you probably want people praying for you. Don’t forget to serve people well, just like you probably want people to serve you well. Share your resources with those who need them, just like you would probably want from others if you were ever in need.
Jesus, thank you for simplifying faith. Help me to follow this one rule you set out for relating to people. Give me the strength to do this in everything, just as you commanded. It’s in your name I pray, amen.
