Perfect Love Drives Out Fear [1 John 4:18 Daily Devotional]

“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.”

1 John 4:18

Love is meant to be a safe place. Vulnerable, yes, but also safe. Fear is driven out by love and cannot exist comfortably within love because “fear has to do with punishment.” Love has less to do with punishment and more to do with enjoyment, and, since fear and love cannot coexist comfortably, it is difficult to be “made perfect in love” as a fearful person.

Perfect Love Drives Out Fear

So, we know that in order to get rid of fear is to love. How can you do that? It’s going back to what I always talk about. Loving others. Pray for people, serve people, and give generously.

When you pray for people, fear begins to melt. Hope begins to enter a person as they’re encouraged and lifted up before the Lord.

When you serve people, you show that they have value. Many people believe that they are worthless or close to it, and they live in fear thinking that they’ll never amount to anything. Serve those people well, as watch their fear leave in your love.

You begin to show your control over fear when you give generously. Your generosity can lift people out of poverty, feed hungry people, and clothe poor people. I encourage you to first start giving to your local church regularly and, second, find some other worthy cause to give to generously.

Prayer

Jesus, thank you for driving out my fear. You’ve shown me an example of perfect love, and I ask that you would help me to live my life in a way similar to yours. Give me opportunities to love others and drive out their fear as you’ve done for me. It’s in your name I pray, amen.
