Guard Your Heart [Proverbs 4:23 Daily Devotional]
The writer of this Proverb is onto something even though this was written thousands of years ago. We need to guard our hearts. While this could be taken literally with the amount of heart disease we hear about, this is clearly a figure of speech. What the author means by “heart” here is our internal health. Since everything we do is motivated by what’s inside us, we need to fervently protect that.
How to Guard Your Heart
Even though the verse doesn’t provide any practical applications, you can use what you already know to protect your hearts. First, you can pray. Prayer helps align your heart to Jesus, who will then direct your steps as you listen for him. You can be sure he won’t lead you astray, so it’s safe to let Jesus “have your heart.”
Second, you can find good, Christian counseling. In this case, joining a small group would also suffice. Counselors and small group leaders come alongside you to help you live your best possible life, so I encourage you to seek out this godly community. Sometimes just talking through what’s weighing you down is a helpful tool in protecting your heart.
Jesus, thank you for community. Help me to find people who will help protect my heart from the world. I ask that you would also give me the strength I need to seek you when I feel like the things around me threaten my internal life. It’s in your name I pray, amen.
