Resurrection and Life [John 11:25 Daily Devotional]

“…I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

John 11:25

Jesus is talking to one of his followers about how following him is the true way to live. Not only is he resurrected, but he himself is also the resurrection and all that entails, like the forgiveness of sins. He’s also life itself. Because he is both resurrection and life, we can expect to have both to the fullest extent when we believe him. In fact, he says that though we die, we live in Christ. And just like his resurrected self, we can expect to never die when living a life of belief in him. Then he challenges his followers, including us today: “Do you believe this?”

Resurrection and Life

If we’re honest, this sounds fantastical. There’s no way this could be true, right? God’s original intent for you was, in fact, immortality. However, the original sin got in the way of that plan and some things had to be adjusted. Through thousands of years, God was working out a redemptive plan just for you. That plan came together through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, which put you back on the right track.

Now, how should you apply this verse? First and foremost, you must believe. This is the hardest part, but if Jesus only ever speaks the truth, that means that what he’s saying is the truth. And if what he’s saying is true, how, then, should you live? Not recklessly, but with love for one another knowing that you’re one immortal person serving another. You and I have such immense intrinsic value that the only proper response is to serve one another well. This sounds intense, but this is the life that the Lord has called you to.

Prayer

Jesus, thank you for eternal life. More than that, though, I thank you for this life right now. Help me to serve others well and give generously to the people in need around me. Give me the wisdom and discernment to see people the way you see them.
