How to Love Jesus [John 14:21 Daily Devotional]

“Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”

John 14:21

We show our love to Jesus by keeping his commands. That love for Jesus that we express is extended to the Father and is given back to us in the same measure. We’re also given a promise that Jesus will show himself to us when we keep his commands and love him.

How to Love Jesus

Keeping commands sounds like a lot of work. However, when Jesus says to keep his commands, he’s really only referring to a couple of things. He wants you to love God and love people. That’s the central point of all of Jesus’s teachings. Even the Great Commission where he tells you – he tells us – to go out and make disciples of the whole world is about loving other people.

So, you can show love to Jesus through prayer and devotion to God. Ask for the things you need and thank God for the things you have. Beyond that, find ways to serve his church and show your devotion to Jesus through your good works. Keep in mind, though, it’s not your good works that grant you eternal salvation. Only Jesus can do that.

Show love to people by serving them. I encourage you to ask yourself what love requires of you in every circumstance. Then I encourage you to do whatever the answer to that is. God loves people, and he loves when his people are taken care of, so take care of God’s people as they take care of you.

Prayer

Jesus, thank you for showing your love for me on the cross. Help me to show my love back to you through devotion to you and loving others. Give me the strength I need to follow through on what love requires of me. It’s in your name I pray, amen.
