How to Seek God [Matthew 5:8 Daily Devotional]

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.”

Matthew 5:8

This verse is from a series of verses from Jesus’s teachings called the Beatitudes. Jesus uses this time with his followers to flip their understanding upside down. It’s the pure in heart that will see God, not the people who are corrupt or who try to take advantage of people. The vision of God is too cloudy for the people who try to push their own agendas forward at the expense of others. So, it’s those who seek God with a pure heart that will see him.

How to Seek God

If it’s the pure in heart that will see God, how can you ensure that you’re pure in heart? First, I’ll address the fact that we all fall short of God’s glory. There isn’t one person who has it all together, and no one is perfect. In fact, none of us truly deserve to see God. But through Jesus’s sacrifice, we’re all given the opportunity to be forgiven and put into right-standing with the God of the universe.

With that in mind, we can then do our best to seek God in ways that honor him. Prayer and Bible reading are great places to start. I hope my daily devotional can help start that journey for you. Beyond prayer and reading, you’ll want to find opportunities to serve others and give generously. By willingly sacrificing your time and money, you’re telling God that his people are more important than your possessions. Lastly, work to remove ungodly thoughts from your thought-life. You and I have more control over our thoughts than we give ourselves credit for. When you have a thought that you know isn’t beneficial to your relationship with Jesus, call it out but have the thought. Then change your mind. Think about something else (see Philippians 4).

It’s through these steps that you can seek God effectively.

Jesus, thank you for your sacrifice for me. Help me to be pure in heart as I seek after you. Give me the wisdom to see people how you see them and give me opportunities to serve them well. It’s in your name I pray, amen.
