How to Do Good Things [1 Peter 3:13 Daily Devotional]
If we seek to do good, no one is going to seek us out to hurt us. Though it may seem like we have some aggressive people in our lives, it’s important to recognize that most people are not going to try to harm us when we try to help them. Being eager to do good protects you and serves others.
How to Do Good Things
If you don’t feel eager to do good, I encourage you to pray about that. Ask the Lord to give you the desire to do good and the opportunities to do so. There’s so much that you can bring to the world that it would be a shame if you weren’t eager to share that goodness.
Some ways you can do good are through praying for others, serving others, and being generous. Praying for others isn’t necessarily a way to meet practical needs, but spiritual needs are just as important – if not more important – than many of our physical needs. Pray for people who are hurting; praise God with the people who are rejoicing. Prayer shows others that you’re there with and for them.
Serving others is literally doing good. Help someone move or paint their house. Get involved in your local church and serve in their community outreaches. It’s important for you to get involved in the lives of others, and this is a great way to get started.
Lastly, being generous requires you to separate yourself from your possessions for the good of others. Give money to your church so they can be equipped to serve your community. Provide food for someone in need (I’ll be honest – I need to be better at this). Each time you do these things, the grip that money has on you will loosen, and you’ll be able to do more without being held back.
Jesus, thank you for opportunities to pray for others, serve others, and be generous. Give me the strength to do each of these things better each day, and help me to not hesitate in doing good. It’s in your name I pray, amen.
