What to Do With the Rest of God [Psalm 4:8 Daily Devotional]

“In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.”

Psalm 4:8

This psalm was likely written by David. This is a biblical figure you most likely know because he’s talked about quite often throughout the whole Bible. The thing about David, though, was that he was a wartime king, so he means it literally when he writes about lying down in peace and safety. There’s truth in what he’s writing, though. Even today, the Lord alone is who provides us with peace and the safety to “lie down and sleep.” He gives us the ability to relax.

What to Do With the Rest of God

Fortunately for you, you most likely do not have other warlords hunting you down. Sure, you may have enemies in the sense that you don’t get along with some people, but I think it’s safe to assume that you’re not being chased down by whole nations.

So, what do you do with this information? Take a rest! You’re not created to just work all the time. Instead, lay down to take a rest sometime. I believe naps are truly a spiritual practice, and it’s one that most people don’t use enough – me included. You can rest assured knowing that the Lord will provide for you even in difficulties. If David, the wartime king, can take his time to rest within the safety of a loving Father, so can you.

Prayer

Jesus, thank you for giving me rest. Help me take the time to slow down and stop what I’m doing so I can “dwell in safety.” It’s in your name I pray, amen.
