How to Seek the Lord [Psalm 34:4 Daily Devotional]

“I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.”

Psalm 34:4

The psalmist is reminding us of what we need to do when we’re afraid: seek the Lord. We can be confident that the Lord will answer us when we seek him. We’re not confident just because this author tells us, but Jesus alludes to this a couple thousand years later. Jesus tells us to ask, seek, and knock for the things we need, which is taking the psalmist’s reminder to the next level. Yes, the Lord will deliver us from our fears, but he’ll do so much more than that.

How to Seek the Lord

I want to be clear here. Though the psalmist writes that the Lord will deliver you from fear, he may not deliver you from your circumstances. Sometimes the only way for you to grow is to live through difficult situations and learn from them. What he will deliver you from, though, is the fear that comes from that situation. Instead of being fearful, you will be given godly confidence that you’re able to handle whatever is thrown at you.

Since you will be delivered from fear, I encourage you to take some steps of faith. Think about something that you feel the Lord has called you to do, and take the first step to accomplishing that goal. Spend time with God, not just to figure out what you are designed to do, but so you can learn about the beautiful, fearless nature of God. Find someone you can serve or be generous to, and take that next step in faith, fully confident that the Lord is with you and delivers you from fear.

Father, thank you for delivering me from fear. Help me to take the next steps in my life while being confident that you’re with me. Give me the strength to do what you’ve called me to do, spend time with you, and serve others. It’s in Jesus’s name I pray, amen.
