How to Put on the Full Armor of God [Ephesians 6:11 Daily Devotional]

“Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.”

Ephesians 6:11

I know we don’t have a high tolerance for military metaphors about our faith nowadays, but it’s a mistake to say that our spiritual life wasn’t a battle. That battle leaks into our mental and physical lives, as well. Paul, the author of this letter, is preparing us for that battle. We’re not meant to stand by and just let stuff happen to us. No, we’re meant to take a stand against the devil’s schemes.

How to Put on the Full Armor of God

Later on in the letter (verses 14 through 17), Paul lists through the armor of God. The words of God are the only thing given to you for offence. So, that means you apply this verse by equipping yourself with the word of truth, which is recorded in the Bible. The New Testament is filled with practical applications for how we overcome evil in this world, and I encourage you to start reading there. The Jewish Scripture does have value, so don’t leave it out. However, the most important part for you to read is the New Testament. Jesus’s words internalized within you will prepare you to take on whatever the devil may throw at you.

Through learning the word, though, you’ll also learn about all the defensive parts of the armor. You’ll have truth to give you balance. You’ll have righteousness and integrity to guard your heart. The knowledge of your salvation will protect your mind, and the gospel message will help you prepare for anything. And finally, through your faith, you’ll be able to extinguish any attack of the devil.

Jesus, thank you for providing me with a defense against the enemy’s attacks. Give me the courage I need to stand up against the devil’s schemes. Where he spews lies, help me to bring in truth. It’s in your name I pray, amen.
