When You Say “Here I Am, Send Me” [Isaiah 6:8 Daily Devotional]

“Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I. Send me!’”

Isaiah 6:8

This is a recorded passage from an Old Covenant prophet named Isaiah. At this particular time, he’s experiencing a vision from the Lord. As with all the other prophets, essentially everything Isaiah said and did reflected about how the Lord felt about ancient Israel. In this case, the Lord was calling for someone from his people (Israel) to step up and make a difference. Isaiah responded as Israel should’ve: “send me!”

When You Say “Here I Am, Send Me

While this verse applies almost exclusively to a specific time in Israel’s history, there’s still something you and I can take from it. It may be in a different way, but the Lord is still calling out for someone who will make a difference. You now get to choose: will you tell the Lord to pick you or someone else?

If you’re like me, you’ve never heard the audible voice of God. Chances are most of us never will, but we don’t need God to speak to us audibly to know what to do. Pay attention to the things that break your heart or bother you. It’s likely that God is calling you to do something about those things. Pay attention to the small nudges from the Holy Spirit that are prodding you in one direction or another. Chances are that that’s what God wants you to do.

Of course, you’ll want to test everything you think is God’s voice against the recorded word of Jesus. It’s likely that anything that deviates from that isn’t actually from God.

Father, thank you for nudging me in the right direction. When I feel lost and confused, you remind me of the plans you have for me. Give me the courage to act on your promptings and the discernment to know when it really is you nudging me. It’s in Jesus’s name I pray, amen.
