What We Deserve [Jeremiah 17:10 Daily Devotional]
This is a warning from the Lord to his people Israel through the prophet Jeremiah. He’s saying that he will search the hearts and minds of his people to determine what their reward is. God still searches hearts and minds today, but the second part is quite a bit different for us Christians. Instead of the Lord giving us what our deeds deserve, he forgives our sins. Because Jesus came and died the death we deserve, Jesus put us into right-standing with God. Because of Jesus, we receive a gift none of us deserved: eternal life.
Applying What We Deserve
This is the beauty of what Jesus did for you. Instead of being locked into an old covenant where you and I get what we deserve, you’re fully forgiven by Jesus’s sacrifice. There’s nothing you can do to earn it.
However, there is something you can do now that you have God’s forgiveness. Share it! Everyone you know should know that you are a Christian. You shouldn’t hit people with a Bible, but they should know where you stand. Always be willing to invite people into your life, and make sure that you’re acting as a solid witness to God’s goodness in your life.
When your life is full of chaos, praise God for everything he’s done for you. The people around you will take notice and want what you have. Always choose joy, even in difficult situations. Those around you will want what you have. And that’s all because Jesus gave you salvation instead of what you deserved.
Father, thank you for the gift of eternal life. Search me and know me; grow me into the person you want me to be. It’s in Jesus’s name I pray, amen.
