How to Give Generously [2 Corinthians 9:6 Daily Devotional]

“Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.”

2 Corinthians 9:6

This verse is all about generosity. When we withhold the resources we have for selfish means, we’re sowing sparingly. It’s when we freely give away what we have that we start to reap the abundant life that Jesus has for us. We can’t give a little and expect to receive a lot, and we shouldn’t expect to get a little when we give a lot.

How to Give Generously

The goal of giving should not be to receive, however. You should give because you have been given much, and you’re just a steward of the resources God has given you. When you hold those resources close to you instead of doing what Jesus commanded you to do (like giving to the poor), then you will reap your stinginess. But when you give away the resources God gave you freely, then you will reap the generosity you’d been sowing. God does not withhold his riches from you, so in the same way, don’t withhold your resources from those in need.

Prayer

Jesus, thank you for giving me so much. Help me to give generously, even when my heart wants to withhold what little I do have. Open my heart to the people you have put around me so I can serve them with my time, money, and resources. It’s in your name I pray, amen.
