How to Let Your Light Shine [Matthew 5:16 Daily Devotional]

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Matthew 5:16

Continuing on what seems to be December’s trend, Jesus is telling us to not hide our lights. When we give our lives to Christ, we become a beacon of hope to a dark and broken world. In many cases, we are the closest thing to Jesus that the people in our lives will get to. We aren’t meant to shine our lights so that we get all the attention, though. The purpose of being a light is to bring glory to God through the good things we do.

How to Let Your Light Shine

While the purpose for you to do good things is not to bring attention to yourself, the purpose of light is to illuminate. Light can’t illuminate if it’s covered or hidden. Instead, Jesus calls you to illuminate him by doing good deeds. You shouldn’t do good deeds in order to try and earn salvation because that won’t work. Your salvation is by grace alone; however, it’s by your salvation that you’re able to be a light to people around you.

You can be a light to people by serving them. Find practical ways to meet the deeds of your neighbors, friends, and strangers. This doesn’t have to be big and dramatic. It can be as simple as giving away a couple of dollars to someone who needs it. In the same way, you may feel compelled to pay for a stranger’s groceries, and that’s a great way to be a light to your community, too.

Prayer

Jesus, thank you for calling me to be a light to my community. Help me to become more like you as I serve those around me and do what you have called me to do. It’s in your name I pray, amen.
