How to Be Anxious for Nothing [Philippians 4:6 Daily Devotional]
Paul is most likely writing this letter from prison toward the end of his life. He’s either awaiting sentencing or his execution. It’s wild to me that someone in that circumstance can still encourage us to never be anxious about anything. He doesn’t just leave it at that, though; he gives us an alternative. Instead of being anxious about anything, pray.
How to Be Anxious for Nothing
There are several ways to deal with anxiety, but they should all start with prayer. If you have been diagnosed with clinical anxiety, it’s okay to take medication as a supplement to your prayers.
Maybe you’re simply a high-strung or worried person, the best way to deal with your anxiety is to do something about what’s worrying you. If you’re anxious about finances, first pray, then make a plan. If you’re anxious about your relationship, first pray, then make a plan. This pattern can apply to anything in life. I only included two examples, but the list goes on. Whatever has you stressed or anxious, first pray, then make a plan.
When you pray, don’t just bombard God with your requests, though. First start with thanking God for what you already have. This isn’t to boost God’s ego, but it’s for you to get your mind on the positive things in life. When you have a positive mindset, it’s easier to see past all the anxieties in your life and focus on God in your situations.
Father, thank you for the ability to look past my anxiety and see you in all circumstances. Help me to come to you in prayer when I’m weighed down by the worries in my life. May my first response to any anxiety be prayer. It’s in Jesus’s name I pray, amen.
