How to Respond to the Call to Worship [Psalm 47:1 Daily Devotional]

“Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy.”

Psalm 47:1

The author of this psalm is inviting us to worship. While we often think of worship as a portion of a weekend service with music, that’s not quite what the author is saying. The clapping of hands and shouting is in response to what God has done, and that’s the part that’s worship. Worship is in the response.

How to Respond to the Call to Worship

For many of you, this will come as a relief. If you’re like me, I don’t like raising my voice, and I don’t often clap my hands or cry in worship. These are just two examples of a response. Here are a few more examples of how you can worship in your response.

  1. Sing to God. You may have heard a song on Sunday that’s been stuck in your head, and I encourage you to sing that outloud when you can. That is a response to something God is doing in you. Even if you feel like you can’t sing well, God wants to hear it.
  2. Thank God. Whether you’re having a good or a bad day, you have plenty to be thankful for. Think on a few of those things and pray your thanks to God as a response to his goodness in providing those things.
  3. Write to God. I don’t mean mail a letter to God, but writing is a powerful outlet to get what’s in your mind out on paper. When you do that, you’re able to slow down and truly think about what you’re thinking about. Take a few moments to write in a prayer or gratitude journal and see how quickly your thoughts shift from negative to positive.

Jesus, I thank you for the varied ways I can worship you. Help me to be consistently looking for ways to praise you throughout the day. It’s in your name I pray, amen.
