Jesus, Light of the World [John 8:12 Daily Devotional]

“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.'”

John 8:12

This verse is a part of a longer passage that may be one of Jesus’s most controversial sermons ever recorded. In fact, many of his dedicated followers choose to stop following him after this passage.

This part, however, is not very controversial, especially nowadays. We see Jesus as the light of the world, and it’s no big deal to us. This verse, then, is encouraging to us. As long as we have Jesus within us – as long as we follow him – then we have the light of life within us. With that light, there’s no darkness that could ever overcome us.

Jesus, Light of the World – Applied

Jesus gives you the application here. Follow him. It’s that simple, and it’s that hard. Following Jesus means denying yourself, which is a very hard thing to do. It means loving others unconditionally, even when they don’t like you very much. Following Jesus means being uncomfortable with how generous you are with your time, money, and resources but giving it away anyway because you know it all belongs to God.

Following Jesus will change your life. It will change how you view those around you, and it will change how you view what you have. It’s my encouragement to you that you will take up your cross and follow Jesus, no matter how difficult it might be. I can boldly encourage you to do that because I know that if you have Jesus, the light of life, living in you, then there’s nothing that will ever overcome you.

Jesus, thank you for being the light in my life. I ask that you would help me to follow you fully and completely. Give me the strength to be irrationally generous with my time, energy, money, and resources. Remind me each day that, with you in me, no darkness could ever come against me.
