Saved from Sin [Matthew 1:21 Daily Devotional]

“She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

Matthew 1:21

I know it’s after Christmas, but I don’t want to give up on the theme yet. This verse is the fulfillment of a prophecy from the Jewish scriptures, which talks about the coming Messiah – the savior of the world. We have the benefit of hindsight in that we know what Jesus did, but those in the actual Christmas story had no idea what was coming or how it would come about. All they knew was what was said in the verse above: “he will save his people from their sins.”

Saved from Sin – Applied

Since you know what Jesus did for you, the best response is to live your life accordingly. You can live in the freedom of knowing that Jesus came to save you from your sins so you could have a full life. So, do the things Jesus did and have a full life! Give generously, pray for others, and serve others. As Paul writes elsewhere, this is our reasonable act of worship.

When you give generously, you’re mirroring how Jesus approached life. He gave his all for us on the cross, and he withholds nothing from us. In the same way, be generous with your time and resources, including your money.

When you pray for others, you’re following in Jesus’s footsteps. He was never too busy to pray for someone. I encourage you to slow down and pray for the people in your life. Not just in your personal prayer time, but actually with them.

When you serve others, you’re literally doing the stuff that Jesus did. If Jesus could take his time to help the people around him. You can, too.

Jesus, I thank you that you’re always giving generously, praying, and serving – even now. Help me to recognize your generosity in my life, and give me the courage to give in the same way. It’s in your name I pray, amen.
