All Things New [Isaiah 43:18-19 Daily Devotional]

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”

Isaiah 43:18-19‬

I know this verse is a cliche for this time of year, but it is fitting. Of course, this is an ancient Jewish prediction of the coming of Jesus, and we get to enjoy the other side of this prediction through Jesus. However, the sentiment remains. God is always doing something new in each and every one of us, and no time makes that more apparent than the New Year.

All Things New – Application

If you’re like me, you consider the New Year as a great time to start (or at least start thinking about) new things you can do to improve your life. Whether it’s reading your Bible more and going to church more or something like working out and eating better, you may have some goals that you want to achieve in the New Year.

If that’s you, I’m glad you’re thinking that way! I encourage you to think in terms of small, actionable steps. If you love eating junk food every night and want to eat less of it, cutting out sugar all at once will probably be doomed to fail. Instead, consider cutting back one night per week every month until you reach your goal. In the same way, if you want to read your Bible, don’t try to read a book a week. Start with a verse a day. There are many great reading plans that help you get into this habit, and my daily devotionals can help as well, as I’ll only cover one or two verses every day.

So, no matter what you’re doing or what you plan to do, my encouragement to you is to take it slow, plan carefully, and then watch how God will bless you in the small steps that lead to big, lasting changes.

Jesus, I thank you for the ability and drive you’ve given me to improve my life. Help me to break all of the things that I want to do into little steps that lead me closer to achieving the goals you’ve put in my heart. It’s in your name I pray, amen.
