How to Not Be Anxious [Philippians 4:6 Daily Devotional]

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

Philippians 4:6

I love this verse. Most people in today’s society suffer from some level of anxiety, whether clinical or otherwise. So when a verse like this comes along, it always helps me recognize that the mental health situations we face are not new to us. Paul, the author of this verse, is most likely in prison. Still, he encourages us today to replace our anxiety with thanksgiving. This is not to downplay the anxiety or try to wish it away, but rather it’s a call to continue to profess God’s goodness even through the anxiety or depression we feel.

How to Not Be Anxious

If you’ve been reading these for any amount of time, you know by now that I’m a big fan of taking care of your mental health. I believe that counseling and even medication can be a part of someone’s healing journey through mental health crises. However, each of those things is just part of what you and I should be doing.

Paul lays out a plan for you and for me. Instead of worrying about the things that are unknown to you, you should act. Not necessarily in the way you typically think, but by praying. You have a choice. You can keep worrying about the issues that you face, or you can ask God to help you through them. Notice that in both of those options, you will have to go through whatever you’re facing. The big difference, though, is that when you worry, you’re setting yourself up to go through it alone. When you present those requests to God, however, you now have a powerful ally to help you through even the most difficult circumstances.

So, my encouragement to you today is to face the trials and troubles you face today with gratitude to God. Not because you’re thankful for the situation, but because you’re thankful that God is here for you now, and he will be forever.

Jesus, thank you for always being with me. Help me to remain thankful even when I feel anxious, tired, and worn out. Give me the strength to persevere through even the hardest circumstances and the wisdom to know when to rest and fight another day. It’s in your name I pray, amen.
