How to Shine Your Light [Isaiah 60:1 Daily Devotional]

“Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.”

Isaiah 60:1

This verse was a recorded saying of an ancient Jewish prophet who was looking toward the future where Jesus came into the world. While he’s looking to the future, we’re actually living in it. Through Jesus, our light has come, and the glory of the Lord does rise on us. This caused Isaiah to write that we’re to rise and let our light shine, and this is a good reason to do that.

How to Shine Your Light

Many years after Isaiah was recorded in Isaiah 60:1, Jesus came to tell us this same thing: let your light shine. Jesus takes it a step further, though, and tells you and me that you and I are the light of the world. So you should be prepared to shine your light.

You can shine your light in a few different ways. These aren’t new or profound, but if you apply these things, you will be fulfilling Jesus’s call to be the light of the world.

Serve, Pray, Give

The first is to serve others. When you serve other people, you are taking a burden off of their shoulders. Jesus did this every chance he had, and he specifically taught his disciples how to do the same. If this was important to Jesus, it should also be important to you. As you serve, people will see Jesus’s light shining through you.

The second is to pray for others. When you pray for others, you share in the burdens that serving can’t take care of. There are just some things that serving physically can’t solve, and that’s where prayer comes in. Take some time to hear what is bothering others and then pray for them.

Lastly, the third is to give to others. When you give to others, you are seeking to alleviate the burdens that others are suffering through. Jesus was incredibly generous with his time and resources, so you and I should do the same. If you don’t know where to start, I encourage you to give to your church who will be able to best serve your community.

If this all seems overwhelming, my encouragement to you is to start small. Just pick one of the three things I mentioned and stick to it and see how your light will shine.

Jesus, thank you for the opportunity to let your light shine through me. Help me to see the people around me and meet their needs. I offer myself to serve, pray for, and give to others. Give me the strength I need to do that. It’s in your name I pray, amen.
